Up and Over Garage Doors,
Manual or Automatic

A tried-and-tested design, up and over doors remain one of the most common choices for UK homes. Available manual or automatic, and fitted by our experienced team across the county.

manual vs electric

Manual or automatic?

Same door and same mechanism. The difference is how you open it and what you pay.

01

Manual up and over

The cheapest new door we fit. With a decent spring set it stays reliable for years and there is nothing electrical to fail.

02

Automatic up and over

A ceiling-mounted opener with remotes and a manual override. Worth it if the garage is used daily or lifting the door by hand is difficult.

03

Retro-fit an opener

Retractable doors can usually be motorised rather than replaced, provided the frame is sound and the springs are in good order. Canopy doors often need a conversion kit or are not suitable.

04

What we recommend

Automatic on a door you use every day, manual on a garage you open twice a month. We will tell you if a new door is the better spend than a kit.

Colours & Finishes

Up and over doors come in the full standard colour range plus woodgrain finishes. White is still the default on replacements, but anthracite grey has overtaken it on anything being upgraded rather than swapped like for like.

Repairs & Servicing

Up and over repairs

Most up-and-over faults come back to the springs, cables or pivot arms.

Damaged panel

The main advantage of sectional: a single panel can usually be swapped rather than replacing the whole door. Worth asking about before you write the door off.

Torsion spring failure

A snapped spring leaves the door impossibly heavy or stuck part-open. Replaced in pairs, and not a safe DIY job — the shaft is under real tension.

Cable off the drum

Once a cable slips the door sits crooked and binds in the tracks. We rewind and rebalance rather than just forcing it back on.

Rollers and hinges

Worn rollers and dropped hinges make the door noisy and jerky. Cheap parts, quick to change, and the fix people notice most.

Motor and safety reverse

Openers that hum without moving, travel limits drifting out, or a door that no longer reverses on obstruction. All repaired and reset.

Perished seals

Sectional doors seal on four sides, so one failed seal is where all the water and draught gets in. Replaced in a single visit.
