How a side hinged garage door is built

Four parts that decide how well the door runs and how long it lasts.

01

Steel subframe

The leaves hang on a steel frame fixed into the structure, not on the brickwork itself. This is what stops the doors dropping and catching as the opening settles.

02

Heavy-duty hinges

Three or four butt hinges per leaf, rated for the weight of the door. Timber leaves need more than steel ones for the same width.

03

Locking and shoot bolts

A central lock on the active leaf, with top and bottom shoot bolts holding the passive leaf into the frame and threshold.

04

Seals and threshold

Compression seals down the meeting stile and around the frame, plus a threshold detail chosen to suit whether the drive slopes towards the garage.

Why Side Hinged

Why choose side hinged

If the garage is as much a shed or a store as a parking space, side hinged doors are the practical choice. You open one leaf, walk in, and get on with it — no lifting a whole door to fetch a bike. They also suit older properties where an up and over or roller door would look wrong, and they work in garages with obstructed headroom, since nothing travels up into the ceiling space.

Repairs & Servicing

Side hinged repairs

Almost everything that goes wrong on these doors comes back to the hinges or the frame.

Dropped or binding leaves

The most common call-out. Usually worn hinges or a frame that has moved, and usually adjustable rather than a replacement door.

Seized shoot bolts

The bottom bolt fills with grit and stops engaging, leaving the passive leaf loose. Cleaned, freed and realigned in one visit.

Rot in timber leaves

Almost always along the bottom rail where water sits. A section can often be spliced and treated rather than replacing the whole leaf.

Lock and handle wear

Central locks and handles take daily use on a walk-through door. All common patterns replaced, and we can key-match to an existing lock.

Perished seals

Draughts and water down the meeting stile. Cheap to replace and the fix people notice most on a garage they actually use.

Doors blowing open

Exposed frontages need a hold-open stay or a closer. We fit both, and it saves the hinges taking the strain every windy day.
