How a side hinged garage door is built
Four parts that decide how well the door runs and how long it lasts.
Steel subframe
The leaves hang on a steel frame fixed into the structure, not on the brickwork itself. This is what stops the doors dropping and catching as the opening settles.
Heavy-duty hinges
Three or four butt hinges per leaf, rated for the weight of the door. Timber leaves need more than steel ones for the same width.
Locking and shoot bolts
A central lock on the active leaf, with top and bottom shoot bolts holding the passive leaf into the frame and threshold.
Seals and threshold
Compression seals down the meeting stile and around the frame, plus a threshold detail chosen to suit whether the drive slopes towards the garage.
Why choose side hinged
If the garage is as much a shed or a store as a parking space, side hinged doors are the practical choice. You open one leaf, walk in, and get on with it — no lifting a whole door to fetch a bike. They also suit older properties where an up and over or roller door would look wrong, and they work in garages with obstructed headroom, since nothing travels up into the ceiling space.

Side hinged repairs
Almost everything that goes wrong on these doors comes back to the hinges or the frame.
Dropped or binding leaves
Seized shoot bolts
Rot in timber leaves
Lock and handle wear
Perished seals
Doors blowing open
